Sciatica can be a life altering condition, and past treatment options have failed to bring relief. A new treatment option is providing relief in most cases, without the risk associated with surgery.

Sciatica is the the term used to identify pain running down the leg, it is irritation of the actual sciatic nerve as it exits the spine at various levels. The sciatic nerve is actually made up of several different nerves joining together to form one large nerve. The most likely cause of sciatica is a herniated or bulging disc in the lower back. The discs are thick fibrous structures between each vertebrae that offer cushioning and spacing needed for the nerves to exit and the flexibility needed to move.

The inner portion of the disc has a much higher water content then the outer portion and as is much softer in consistency. One the outer fibers become weaker or are damaged the softer material begins to move it’s way outward because of the positive pressure on the disc itself. As it moves out it begins to create a bulge or what’s called a herniated causing the disc to protrude outwards and narrowing the hole where the nerve exits. The narrowing can cause direct pressure on the nerve itself or create inflammation that can then irritate the nerve creating symptoms of pain, numbness or weakness down the leg.

The treatment of sciatica often includes medications, spinal injections and in severe cases surgery may be recommended. With the exception of surgery these treatments are often temporary and don’t treat the actual cause. They also bring with them the risk of undesirable side effects. If the nerve is actually compressed these treatments may offer very little relief if any at all, and surgery brings with it other undesirable risks.

Steroid injections are one of the most common treatments utilized for severe sciatica as we have outlined previously. The goal of the injection is to reduce inflammation and soothe the surrounding areas. The problem is that the injection is only temporary and offers no real long term benefit for the patient. Side effect can include spinal headaches, a rebound pain phenomenon and a spike in blood sugar in diabetics. The relief obtained can sometimes be worth the risk, however a proactive approach must be coupled with the short term pain relief.

If sciatic pain becomes unbearable then surgical intervention may be recommended. In a small number of sciatica cases this treatment may provide relief, at least temporarily. The problem is that surgical outcomes on the spine are low with about a 50% success rate and it brings with it significant risk factors. A common condition called failed back surgery syndrome is associated with spinal surgery and can the result of excessive scar tissue formation, spinal instability after surgery and increased stress on other spinal structures. The risk is also there for the need for a repeat surgery down the road.

Fortunately a new treatment exists that is highly effective and doesn’t bring with it the risk of side effects associated with other treatments. Spinal Decompression is a new, advanced form of spinal traction with a patented computer monitoring device. This device allow a gently and logarithmic pull of the spine safely bypassing the guarding reflex muscle contraction associated with traditional traction. Bypassing this muscle response allows a therapeutic negative pressure to develop inside the disc space drawing in nutrition and fluid to help the disc heal, but also reducing herniated or bulging material and relieving the sciatica nerve. The treatment is safe and gentle and brings with it a very high success rate in the high 80 percentile and because it physically treats the cause of sciatica the problem is not likely to return.

As research continues to pour in on spinal decompression, the benefits of this technology are more and more evident. It represents a real option for many suffering from sciatica to truly correct the problem and remain pain free. Although there are some that spinal decompression is not indicated for, many will find long lastly and highly effective relief from spinal decompression.

Herbs are an integral part of all sciatica alternative remedies. Many conventional medicines were initially derived from herbs and natural products and later synthesized for mass production.

Herbs are relatively safe and, if taken in recommended quantities, do not lead to any complication that cannot be managed easily. That cannot be said of many convention medicines. A typical herbal sciatic nerve treatment for managing pain will include any or more of the following herbs:

Devil’s Claw

Low doses of devil’s claw, initially known for relieving pain from arthritis, can ease sciatic pain.

Oil of Wintergreen

It is widely used for treating inflammation caused by arthritis, sciatica, arthritis, rheumatism and tense muscles externally.

St. Johns wort

Rubbing oil from this herb on the affected part, preferably before bedtime, will take care of any intense pain and tension.

Chamomile

Chamomile has a healing effect on muscle tissue. Topical application or chamomile tea or 10-20 drops of extract in water produces instant results.

Horsetail

This herb with hollow stems and a narrow leaves that spread by creeping rhizomes is an effective remedy for building connective tissue.

Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the most talked about herbal remedies for injury, sciatica, healing wounds and pain management. It has been in use in Asia for a long time and has a very strong track record. It can be ingested on daily basis, even in its raw form mixed in milk or used as a topical remedy by mixing it with butter oil and other herbs like garlic and leek.

Jamaican Dogwood

This herb is used for compression of nerves like sciatic nerve, and painful menstruation. Take .2 to 4 grams of dried root of the herb three times a day. This should be enough to relieve episodes of sciatica. However, this herb is not recommended for pregnant women or lactating mothers and individuals with congestive cardiac conditions.

Garlic and mustard Oil

Garlic pods and mustard oil are effective pain reliever. Put some garlic pods in mustard oil and heat till the garlic is burnt. Let it cool. A regular massage over the affected part will relieve mild pain.

Herbs can be used as standalone medicines and topical applications. They can also be used in combination of more than one herb. Although a safer option than conventional medicines, indiscriminate use of herbs can prove to be dangerous in some rare cases.

Moreover, herbs should be used only after gathering relevant information about the dosage and instances where they should not be used. While a topical application of herbs is devoid of any negative effect on the patient, ingestion can sometimes produce mild side effects.

Physical Therapy for Sciatica Pain Relief

I want to talk to you about physical therapy for sciatica pain relief. This problem can be quite challenging for most people. The pains are often unbearable and you find yourself constantly watching how you move, so you hopefully don’t cause anymore pain.

I wanted to take the time to talk to you about physical therapy for sciatica pain relief and other treatment methods for this very painful condition. This is a very challenging condition because it seems to follow you everywhere. It doesn’t matter if you’re going for a walk, or sitting in a chair reading the newspaper. It just has a way of causing pain. I want to share some things you can do to have sciatica pain relief.

Here is a list of the most common treatments for sciatica:

Acupuncture - This is a method based on Eastern medicine. There hasn’t been much in the way of science, but if it works for you than good. The problem I see is that it doesn’t offer a permanent solution. You’ll have to continue going back and paying for treatment.

Anti-inflammatory Medication - I don’t really consider this a solution, but it definitely designed for sciatica pain relief. It’s like the problem above; you have to pay on a regular basis just to numb the pain.

Chiropractic - This is a very expensive choice, but a lot of people think these people work very well. The problem I see is that it is expensive and it requires a lot of repeat treatments. You’ll be fine one day, than your back pain will be back, worse than before.

Surgery - This is definitely a last resort for sciatica pain relief and I wouldn’t even recommend it then. You don’t want to have surgery on the back, especially involving nerves. Most of the pain caused by sciatica is nerve irritation by the spine.

When you look at this solutions over the long run, it would seem that people are just forking their money over to a treatment method that doesn’t offer anything in the long term to solve the problem. Physical therapy for sciatica pain relief is much better. You can do simple exercises right from your own home that can eliminate the pain. You don’t have to fork out any money to do them, so it seems like a more logical choice.

In fact, even a complete medical exam may not reveal the cause.

Sciatica Symptoms and Sciatic Nerve Pain

The sciatic nerve is formed from the lower segments of the spinal cord. Sciatic nerve pain occurs when there is damage to the sciatic nerve. Sciatica can be very frightening especially if you don’t realize what is wrong…

The sciatic nerve is formed from the lower segments of the spinal cord. Sciatic nerve pain occurs when there is damage to the sciatic nerve. It occurs due to a pinched nerve near a disc at the spinal cord or a bone. The pain runs from the buttocks down the back of the leg.

Sciatic nerve pain occurs where there is damage to the sciatic nerve located at the back of the leg. This nerve controls the muscles of the back of the knee and lower leg and provides sensation to the back of the thigh, part of the lower leg and the sole of the foot.

Common symptoms of sciatic nerve pain include:

Cramping sensation of the thigh

Shooting pains from the buttocks down the leg

Tingling or pins and needles sensations in the legs and thighs

Burning sensation in the thigh

Sciatica can develop in almost anyone with an age ranging from 30 to 50 year old patients. The sciatic nerve, like most other nerves, performs two basic functions, first it sends signals to your muscles from the brain, and second it collects sensory information from the legs and passes this back to your brain. When people normally refer to sciatica, it is not necessarily a problem of the sciatic nerve; it is a problem of the nerve when it is being pinched as it exits from the spine.

The sciatic nerve is commonly injured by the fractures of the pelvis or other trauma to the buttocks or to the thigh. . This pressure is created due to prolonged sitting or lying in a particular position, which gradually injures the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve may also be harmed by pressure from such as tumor or bleeding in the pelvis. Depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected, the pain may also radiate to the foot or toes. The following sensations may occur as a result of sciatica:

Pain at the back or leg that is worse when sitting.

Burning or tingling sensation down the leg

Difficulty moving the leg or foot due to weakness or numbness

A constant pain on one side of the rear that makes difficulty to stand up.

Precautions to be taken:

Sciatica can be very frightening especially if you don’t realize what is wrong. You begin to feel that you may become crippled, although most of the time sciatic nerve pain can be treated effectively. For the first few days it is very important to stay off your feet. Getting up and down repeatedly causes the nerve to become more irritated. Warm water soaking can be very soothing but prolonged heat draws the inflammation in, keeping the swelling high. Most doctors tell their patients to apply ice packs directly on to their lower back area for about twenty minutes, every couple of hours. Although this can feel like a torture, the cold pack reduces swelling.

Treatment:
Some doctors prescribe medicines but medications can be highly addictive. Surgery is not considered as a good alternative as it only helps about one in a hundred people. Surgery has also been known to cause even more damage in many cases. Only open back surgery can correct sciatica but it also may bring with it high risks and many complications. There is also another treatment that is the laser spine treatment where the protruded disc is removed with laser so that the spinal cord or the nerve root is no longer impinged.

Sciatica Home Treatment

Sciatica is a condition rather than a disease which has been caused by other conditions which are affecting the health of a person.

There are three primary causes for a person to suffer from sciatica namely a herniated disc, piriformis syndrome or spinal stenosis. However there are ways of treating sciatica without a person having to resort to using medications that their doctor prescribes or which can be brought over the counter at your local drug store. In this article I will be looking at some sciatica home treatment methods that you may want to consider.

Potato and celery juice when combined together are said to provide relief from the pain of sciatica. But in order for them to be truly effective a person should be looking to drink at least 10 ounces each day. However if the thought of drinking just potato and celery juice on their own leaves you with a feeling of dread, then why not add some carrot and beetroot juice to the mixture as well. These two juices not only help to fortify the mixture but also make it taste more pleasant as well. If however you are unable to drink this type of juice on a daily basis then you could drink celery tea throughout the day instead.

Another juice you may want to consider drinking instead of the above is that made from elderberries. Not only can you drink it in a juice format you could also drink it as a tea. This particular food contains properties which help to relax and stimulate the muscles and so can be beneficial in treating the symptoms associated with sciatica.

Plus eating raw garlic or taking a garlic supplement with other kinds of supplements can also help to relief the aches and pains as well as improve circulation around the body. You can also take Vitamin B1 or B Complex supplement with this in order to be able to reap the full benefits that garlic can provide in helping to treat sciatica symptoms. The reason why garlic seems to be effective as a sciatica home treatment is that it contains anti oxidant properties and also helps to provide the body with warmth and energy.

Also as well as using the kind of sciatica home treatment methods provided above a person who suffers from sciatica should be looking to improve their health overall. In order to do this they must ensure that their diet is good and that they start carrying out some form of exercise as well.

Sciatica Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Sciatica Pain is caused due to the irritation of sciatic nerve specifically in lower back, back of thighs and hip region. Often, treatments are varied depending on the causes of the visible symptoms.

What is Sciatica?
If you are a sedentary worker experiencing back pain or lower body pain, especially in the legs in the form of numbness, tingling and you have a problem walking or flexing your muscles, consult a doctor immediately. The cause of this could be a condition known as sciatica.

Sciatica is a set of conditions that are caused when the sciatic nerve which is the largest nerve with the diameter as that of a finger in the body is pressurized or an irritation occurs in the radicular nerve that exits the lower spine it causes pain in the lower body especially the lower back, the back of thighs and legs and the hip region. Thus this condition is also known as radiculopathy. Sciatica is not always very serious and generally resolves in 4-6 weeks but in some cases it may require surgery, especially when caused due to infections or tumors and in such situations it is best to have the opinion of a medical practitioner promptly.

Sciatica Symptoms
The most common signs and symptoms of sciatica are pain in the lower extremities of the body especially starting at the base of the spine and routing downwards along the path of the sciatic nerve or nerve root to the pelvic region, buttocks, thighs, back of the legs and foot. This pain may be a slight nuisance pain that can be a tingling pain or even a burning sensation and numbness that can vary in intensity and also be constant or intermittent developing gradually, making it hard to detect always.

Sciatica usually occurs only on one side of the body.

Causes of Sciatica
Sciatica pain is generally seen in people who need to spend long amounts of time sitting or standing and bad posture and lack of muscle movement causes the muscles to constrict or be irritated causing pain. It can even be bought on by hard sneezes, coughing fits and lifting something, these activities may cause pressure on the spine and thus it may irritate the radicular nerve by extending beyond its normal position.

Commonly the major cause can be pinned as disc herniation in the lumbar spine which presses directly on the sciatic nerve and any triggers by such a reaction for example by irritation of the nerve from adjacent bone which in turn produces the symptoms of sciatica. Besides a compressed or a pinched nerve, other causes could also be tumors, muscle, internal bleeding, infections, injury etc. thus sciatica is not really a disease by itself but rather many other dependants make it into a medical condition worthy of attention. Even something as simple as muscle strain may cause the muscle to freeze up or be "pulled" and gradually develop into this problem.

Spinal stenosis is the constriction or narrowing of the spaces in the spine that causes the spine or the nerves to be compressed in a way that it causes pain especially in the lower back.

In advanced spinal osteoarthritis, a bit of cartilage may break away and become mobile in the spinal area and become a reason of irritation and inflammation which when occurring in the lower back region may develop into sciatica by putting undue pressure on the sciatic nerve. This is also called in degenerative disc disease.

If a vertebra slips over the other, which is commonly called as slipped disc or Spondylolisthesis the skewed vertebra could pressurize the sciatic nerve.

There are still other issues which can trigger sciatica pain like Piriformis syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction etc which are not really sciatica but these diseases may also set off sciatica because of their symptoms.

Sciatica Treatment
In cases which are very extreme sciatica can be serious enough for being operated upon. Thus, it becomes very important to diagnose the real cause for sciatica in order to rule out the possibility of another serious heath problem which could require immediate attention and/or surgery.

Sciatica treatment should only be carried out by a trained health professional. Besides anti-inflammatory medication and analgesics, exercise is also prescribed under the care of a physiotherapist. As the type of exercise depends on the cause of sciatic pain they must be done after consultation and practiced on a regular basis, twice a day to provide complete relief from pain. Though bed rest may seem like the better option but inactivity results in the muscles degenerating further and exercising them makes them more mobile by boosting circulation and helps to adequately carry the fluids and nutrients across the system.

Minding the body posture and avoiding soft surfaces that encourage slouching must be a part of treatment. Being in the same position for long or lifting things puts strains on the spinal chord as well as the muscles in the hips and legs thus that must also be avoided.

It is best to consult a doctor immediately in order to diagnose the problem correctly and ensure that appropriate steps are taken or this could develop into a grave problem.

Sciatica - Sciatic Pain Stretches and Treatments

Sciatic Pain is one of the most common conditions of back pain sufferers. Sciatica is a condition that causes pain in the buttocks, leg and back and can even travel down to the toes. There are several stretches and treatments that can help eliminate your sciatic leg pain…

Sciatica - Sciatic Pain in Leg

Sciatica is likely one of the first words that come to mind when thinking of leg pain. This article offers a brief guide to understanding sciatica, as well as methods for treating sciatic pain in leg, back, and buttocks.

What causes sciatica?

Sciatica is a term used to describe a set of symptoms, not an actual medical diagnosis. Sciatic pain starts in the lower back from a pinched nerve. Contrary to popular belief, sciatica is not passed on genetically. The sciatic nerve becomes pinched as a result of a spinal injury or conditions that occur during aging. A herniated (or "slipped") disc, weakened spine, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), or a lumbar subluxation (vertabra in an improper position) are some common causes of a pinched sciatic nerve.

Symptoms of sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. When pinched, pain can follow the nerve from the lower back, out to one side or the other of the buttocks, most notably causing leg pain down the back of one leg and sometimes into the feet and toes.

The actual intensity and duration of leg pain and other symptoms can vary widely between individuals. Sciatica may be a minor irritation for one patient, while another may experience debilitating sciatic pain in leg, rear, and lower back.

Recovery from sciatica often takes only a few weeks, but some find sciatic leg pain to be much more persistent - sometimes lasting months or years. Symptoms may grow worse over time.

Please note that if you experience increasing weakness or loss of sensation in the legs or any loss of control in bowel or bladder you should seek immediate medical attention.

Treatment for sciatic leg pain

Any treatment of sciatica must begin with an accurate diagnosis of the source of trouble. Arthritis and piriformis syndrome are two conditions frequently confused with sciatica as they have similar symptoms.

Once the cause of leg pain has been determined to be sciatica, treatments may include:

Physical therapy or chiropractic care to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve

Alternating heat and ice massage therapy for pain relief

Anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids to relieve inflammation and related pressure

Steroid injections into the spine (epidurals) to relieve inflammation and lower back pain

Surgery

The sciatic nerve also referred to, as the ischiatic nerve is a large nerve in the human body. Several nerve roots leave the spinal cord and exit through holes in the sacrum which combine to form the sciatic nerve, which then passes between layers of the buttock muscles into the deep muscles of the back of the thigh. The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest single nerve in the body, which supplies almost the entire skin of the leg, the muscles of the back of the thigh, and those of the leg and foot.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatic nerve problems refer to a condition called sciatica, which is characterized by pain, tingling, or numbness produced by an irritation of the nerve roots that lead to the sciatic nerve. Thus simply put, sciatica is the inflammation of the sciatic nerve, which is marked by pain and tenderness along the course of the nerve through the thigh and leg.

Symptoms of Sciatic Nerve Problems

Symptoms of sciatic nerve problems include, pain starting in the buttocks and extending down the rear of the thigh or to the lower leg and the sole of the foot. Pain in the lower back may also persist. Other symptoms of sciatic nerve problems include weakness, tingling, or numbness in the leg. It is always better to consult a physician at the onset of these symptoms.

Diagnosis of Sciatic Nerve Problems

Medical analysis of your symptoms can be the first mode of diagnosis of sciatic nerve problems. Mostly the doctors will diagnose the problems from the symptoms. However, in certain cases, some additional tests are required for diagnosis. The commonly used tests, which are used to confirm the diagnosis, are X-ray tests and magnetic resonance imaging tests.

Causes of Sciatic Nerve Problems

There are several causes of sciatic nerve problems. A bulging lumbar disc is one of the reasons for sciatic nerve problems. In this case, the gel-like center, which is called the nucleus pulposus, remains ‘contained’ within the outer wall of the disc. On the other hand, a case of herniated disc occurs when the nucleus breaks through the annulus. In both the cases, disc material can press against an adjacent nerve root and compress the delicate nerve tissue. This can cause sciatic nerve inflammation called sciatica.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, which is a nerve compression disorder, is also one of the major causes of sciatic nerve problems that are more common in old age.

Spondylolisthesis, which is a disorder affecting the lumbar spine is also one of the causes of sciatic leg pain. Spondylolisthesis is either acquired at birth or caused by spinal degeneration or physical stress. Sciatic nerve problems can also be a result of direct nerve compression caused by external forces to the lumbar or sacral spinal nerve roots.

The Piriformis Syndrome is named after the piriformis muscle, which is located in the lower part of the spine and connects to the thighbone and assists in hip rotation. Sciatic pain is the result of irritation of the sciatic muscle by the piriformis muscle.

Treatment of Sciatic Nerve Problems

Most of the times, sciatic nerve problems heal with time. The primary treatment for sciatic nerve problems includes medicines and exercises to relieve pain. Using a cold pack on the middle of the lower back can also provide some relief from pain. Short walks can be another option in this regard. However, the walking distance should be increased gradually. Drugs used for the treatment include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In addition to this, physical therapy or even surgery might be suggested in severe cases.

Back Pain and Sciatica Excercises for Sciatica Relief

Sciatica is a set of symptoms associated with Back Pain that is caused by irregular compression of radicular nerve or nerve roots of sciatic nerve. Exercises are often best means to achieve Sciatica Relief. They vary according to the cause of pain…

Sciatica is not just a disease or ailment or even a diagnosis by itself that would point to any particular cause of pain, rather it is a set of symptoms. Generally it is used for any pain that is caused by the irregular compression or nuisance in one or more of the nerves in the lower part of the spinal chord that make up the sciatic nerve. These can be caused by various different conditions.

The medical term for sciatic is radiculopathy, which occurs when a spinal disc in the lower back has been extended beyond what is its normal position, irritating the radicular nerve or the nerve root which is connected to the sciatic nerve that in turn has its off-shoots snaking its way down into the lower body through the back of the leg and thus pain is experienced along its path.

Exercises for Sciatica
While we may prefer bed rest to exercise when in pain, active sciatica exercise is the best mechanism for healing sciatica pain. Doctors advise rest to patients for just a day or two after a bout of sciatica but inactivity will only aid in worsening the pain because due to the lack of movement the muscles and spinal structures become further de-conditioned and thus their support of the back weakens leading to back injury and major strain on the muscles and spine which adds to the lower body and back pain.

Exercising also keeps the fluids between the discs healthy and well lubricated as also helping with the dispersion of nutrition and strengthening the muscles of the abdomen and back.
Sciatica exercises for sciatica relief are of many different kinds depending on the cause of the pain and mostly involve stretching to target specific muscles. Engaging in regular exercise helps to keep these muscles mobile and strengthens them that helps to speed up the recuperation process as well as prevent future such painful incidences.

A physiotherapist, certified athletic trainer (ATC), chiropractor, physiatrist or a specialist who treats back and lower body problems can be consulted for sciatica pain relief and exercise should only be done under the supervision of a trained professional. It is very important to get an accurate diagnosis of the cause of the pain because the exercise program to be recommended rests on that. Though rare, sciatica can also be caused by an infection or tumor that requires serious and immediate medical attention.
1. Sciatica from a herniated disc
2. Sciatica from spinal stenosis
3. Sciatica from degenerative disc disease
4. Sciatica from isthmic spondylolisthesis
5. Sciatic pain from piriformis syndrome
6. Sciatic pain from sacroiliac joint dysfunction
7. Hamstring stretching exercises for sciatica

The sciatica exercises for each of these conditions is different and must be done correctly, on a regular basis at least twice a day to obtain optimum results.

Herniated disc Sciatica
It normally causes acute leg pain as the disc protrudes in the incorrect direction or a nerve root is compressed causing pain to radiate along the sciatic nerve. The exercises prescribed for such a problem are ones that need the patient to get into a backwards bending position called extension exercises or press-ups which cause the pain to ease by moving the muscles in the lower extremities upwards and into the lower back.

Spinal Stenosis Sciatica
This is caused by nerve root irritation or impinging which results in the constriction of the nerve’s passageway. This pain shots down the leg while walking or muscle flexing. All exercises that require the patient to bend forward and flex the lower spine help to clear and expand these passages by stabilizing the lower spine thus allowing for the condition heal.

Degenerative disc disease Sciatica
When a degenerative disc intrudes on a sciatic nerve in the lower back it is the cause of sciatica. Exercises for lumbar stabilization are prescribed for this kind of sciatica and includes the McKenzie Method. The lumbar spine and pelvic regions are trained using these exercise movements.

Isthmic spondylolisthesis Sciatica
When the N5 nerve root is impinged upon it is the cause of this kind of sciatica. There are two kinds of exercises that help in this condition; flexing and stabilizing that help the lumbar spine to remain stable in a flexed position.

Piriformis syndrome
Experiencing pain along the sciatic nerve is a common symptom of piriformis syndrome. But this syndrome is not really sciatica but a muscle called the piriformis muscle which lies in close proximity to the sciatic nerve itself is irritates it to cause pain. These cause excruciating pain, tingling and numbness running from the lower back, to the rear and sometimes down the leg and into the foot. Stretching exercises for the piriformis muscle, hamstring muscles and hip extensor muscles helps decrease the painful symptoms.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
The inflammation of the SI joint or sacroiliac joint causes this. Therefore this is not true sciatica but the similar symptoms occur and exercise like stretching and movement exercises should be performed to help alleviate the pain.

Long term Sciatica Relief
These exercises must be performed as a part of daily living and not just treated as a means to get rid of back pain. They ensure good spinal health and help to ease the pressures that stress has on us. It is also a must to maintain good posture while performing daily activities and use ergonomically correct furniture to make sure the lower back is well supported and avoid standing or being cramped in the same position for long periods of time.

Sciatica Treatment. Home Remedies for Sciatica Relief.

Treatments for Sciatica, an aching condition that is characterized by lower back pain are numerous. Let us discover some effective Home Remedies for Sciatica Relief…

Sciatica Causes
It is essential to understand that sciatica itself is not the name of a disease but rather it is condition caused by a set of other conditions. Sciatica is generally caused by these primary conditions:

Firstly we have Herniated Discs which is sciatica caused by the pressure from a herniated or protruding disc on the sciatic nerve. A herniated disc is simply a disc that has been displaced due to external pressure from an accident or by constant pressure due to muscle imbalance. This can be the cause for sciatic pain but it is equally important to note that many people with herniated discs may not experience any pain at all.

Then sciatica can be caused by Piriformis Syndrome. The piriformis muscle exerts pressure on the sciatic nerve when muscle imbalances cause the joints in the pelvic areas to be pulled out of place and thus changing the seat of the piriformis muscle, which in turn puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Spinal Stenosis is the narrowing or constriction of the space in the spinal canal causing muscle imbalances that tug at your hip and spine and cause them to become positioned awkwardly causing an irritation due to constant contact and pressuring the sciatic nerve.

Isthmic Spondylolisthesis
This is when a vertebra is dislocated from its normal position and can start to pinch the sciatic nerve.

If you have noticed all these conditions have a common denominator: muscle strain or muscle imbalance. A muscle injury can occur anywhere and it means that your muscle flexibility is reduced and there is pain in most cases followed by various other sciatica symptoms like numbness, muscular irritation, tingling sensation etc.

These may be a result of a more serious internal condition and it is imperative to consult a doctor immediately to be able to diagnose the correct reason for this condition. In rare cases, a surgery might be necessary too but in most cases the diagnosis consists of pain alleviating medication, analgesics and specially designed exercises that must be practiced with regularity in order to obtain sciatica relief.

Sciatica Treatment
Though exercises and medication is a must but they must only be taken after advice from a doctor. But there have been some time tested natural cures for healing sciatica.

Sciatica cures assume various forms and these home remedies have been found to be very helpful if incorporated into daily life along with the proper exercise routines.

Home remedies for sciatica relief
Juices like the juice of potatoes and celery leaves. These juices in combination are said to provide sciatica relief when drunk in a minimum quantity of 10 ounces daily. The addition of carrots and beetroots to this mixture is said to fortify the strength and taste. If you can’t drink the juice drinking celery tea throughout the day is also beneficial.

Elderberry juice and/or elderberry tea is a known muscle relaxant and stimulant and is said to treat sciatica symptoms.

Consuming raw garlic or taking garlic supplements with along with additional supplements of vitamin B1 and B-complex gives relief from aches and pains, aids circulation, is an anti-oxidant and also provides the body with warmth and energy.

The common natural sources of B1 or Thiamine are Green peas, Spinach, Liver, Beef, and Pork, Navy beans, Nuts, Pinto beans, Bananas, Soybeans, Whole-grain Cereals, Breads, unpolished rice and Legumes. Thus maintaining a healthy balanced diet containing these and salads containing watercress and parsley apart from green leafy vegetables and fresh red vegetables is very important for good health.

Some claim that garlic milk also can be an excellent sciatica home treatment. Just mince two cloves of garlic in about a cup of milk and drink this concoction twice daily and the results can be seen in just a week’s time.

Germans have been eating raw sauerkraut since ages to relieve muscular pain.

However, care must be taken to avoid garlic if you are taking any other medication like anticoagulants, if you have any bleeding disorders or ulcers and take the advice of your doctor before taking garlic supplements.

Another magical home remedy to treat sciatica is fresh minced horseradish poultice, which when applied to the painful areas and kept for at least an hour at a time stimulates the sciatica nerve and give tremendous relief from sciatica pain.

Water is one of the best natural treatment options for sciatica pain relief. Water can help to bring down pain by improving circulation. Taking long hot bath or a shower and following it up with a short cold shower is said to boost the body’s circulation and reduce pain. Taking hot and cold compresses too is equally beneficial.

Treatments for sciatica must include a good diet, exercise and the patient must aim at improving overall health. Also to avoid such problems in the long run, sleeping on a firm mattress, sitting and standing in a good posture, avoiding lifting heavy loads should be a part of everyday care that must be taken. It is these small things that cause sciatica over a period of time.
