Sciatic Nerve Problems

Read this article to find out the symptoms, diagnosis, causes and treatment of sciatic nerve problems…

The sciatic nerve also referred to, as the ischiatic nerve is a large nerve in the human body. Several nerve roots leave the spinal cord and exit through holes in the sacrum which combine to form the sciatic nerve, which then passes between layers of the buttock muscles into the deep muscles of the back of the thigh. The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest single nerve in the body, which supplies almost the entire skin of the leg, the muscles of the back of the thigh, and those of the leg and foot.

sciatic nerve leg pain

What is Sciatica?

Sciatic nerve problems refer to a condition called sciatica, which is characterized by pain, tingling, or numbness produced by an irritation of the nerve roots that lead to the sciatic nerve. Thus simply put, sciatica is the inflammation of the sciatic nerve, which is marked by pain and tenderness along the course of the nerve through the thigh and leg.

Symptoms of Sciatic Nerve Problems

Symptoms of sciatic nerve problems include, pain starting in the buttocks and extending down the rear of the thigh or to the lower leg and the sole of the foot. Pain in the lower back may also persist. Other symptoms of sciatic nerve problems include weakness, tingling, or numbness in the leg. It is always better to consult a physician at the onset of these symptoms.

Diagnosis of Sciatic Nerve Problems

Medical analysis of your symptoms can be the first mode of diagnosis of sciatic nerve problems. Mostly the doctors will diagnose the problems from the symptoms. However, in certain cases, some additional tests are required for diagnosis. The commonly used tests, which are used to confirm the diagnosis, are X-ray tests and magnetic resonance imaging tests.

Causes of Sciatic Nerve Problems

  • There are several causes of sciatic nerve problems. A bulging lumbar disc is one of the reasons for sciatic nerve problems. In this case, the gel-like center, which is called the nucleus pulposus, remains ‘contained’ within the outer wall of the disc. On the other hand, a case of herniated disc occurs when the nucleus breaks through the annulus. In both the cases, disc material can press against an adjacent nerve root and compress the delicate nerve tissue. This can cause sciatic nerve inflammation called sciatica.
  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, which is a nerve compression disorder, is also one of the major causes of sciatic nerve problems that are more common in old age.
  • Spondylolisthesis, which is a disorder affecting the lumbar spine is also one of the causes of sciatic leg pain. Spondylolisthesis is either acquired at birth or caused by spinal degeneration or physical stress. Sciatic nerve problems can also be a result of direct nerve compression caused by external forces to the lumbar or sacral spinal nerve roots.
  • The Piriformis Syndrome is named after the piriformis muscle, which is located in the lower part of the spine and connects to the thighbone and assists in hip rotation. Sciatic pain is the result of irritation of the sciatic muscle by the piriformis muscle.

Treatment of Sciatic Nerve Problems

Most of the times, sciatic nerve problems heal with time. The primary treatment for sciatic nerve problems includes medicines and exercises to relieve pain. Using a cold pack on the middle of the lower back can also provide some relief from pain. Short walks can be another option in this regard. However, the walking distance should be increased gradually. Drugs used for the treatment include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In addition to this, physical therapy or even surgery might be suggested in severe cases.

Back Pain and Sciatica Excercises for Sciatica Relief

Sciatica is a set of symptoms associated with Back Pain that is caused by irregular compression of radicular nerve or nerve roots of sciatic nerve. Exercises are often best means to achieve Sciatica Relief. They vary according to the cause of pain…

siatic treatment
What is Sciatica?
This is a term that is the cause of much confusion and is often grossly misunderstood. Sciatica is not just a disease or ailment or even a diagnosis by itself that would point to any particular cause of pain, rather it is a set of symptoms. Generally it is used for any pain that is caused by the irregular compression or nuisance in one or more of the nerves in the lower part of the spinal chord that make up the sciatic nerve. These can be caused by various different conditions.

The medical term for sciatic is radiculopathy, which occurs when a spinal disc in the lower back has been extended beyond what is its normal position, irritating the radicular nerve or the nerve root which is connected to the sciatic nerve that in turn has its off-shoots snaking its way down into the lower body through the back of the leg and thus pain is experienced along its path.

Exercises for Sciatica
While we may prefer bed rest to exercise when in pain, active sciatica exercise is the best mechanism for healing sciatica pain. Doctors advise rest to patients for just a day or two after a bout of sciatica but inactivity will only aid in worsening the pain because due to the lack of movement the muscles and spinal structures become further de-conditioned and thus their support of the back weakens leading to back injury and major strain on the muscles and spine which adds to the lower body and back pain.

Exercising also keeps the fluids between the discs healthy and well lubricated as also helping with the dispersion of nutrition and strengthening the muscles of the abdomen and back.
Sciatica exercises for sciatica relief are of many different kinds depending on the cause of the pain and mostly involve stretching to target specific muscles. Engaging in regular exercise helps to keep these muscles mobile and strengthens them that helps to speed up the recuperation process as well as prevent future such painful incidences.

A physiotherapist, certified athletic trainer (ATC), chiropractor, physiatrist or a specialist who treats back and lower body problems can be consulted for sciatica pain relief and exercise should only be done under the supervision of a trained professional. It is very important to get an accurate diagnosis of the cause of the pain because the exercise program to be recommended rests on that. Though rare, sciatica can also be caused by an infection or tumor that requires serious and immediate medical attention.
1. Sciatica from a herniated disc
2. Sciatica from spinal stenosis
3. Sciatica from degenerative disc disease
4. Sciatica from isthmic spondylolisthesis
5. Sciatic pain from piriformis syndrome
6. Sciatic pain from sacroiliac joint dysfunction
7. Hamstring stretching exercises for sciatica

The sciatica exercises for each of these conditions is different and must be done correctly, on a regular basis at least twice a day to obtain optimum results.

Herniated disc Sciatica
It normally causes acute leg pain as the disc protrudes in the incorrect direction or a nerve root is compressed causing pain to radiate along the sciatic nerve. The exercises prescribed for such a problem are ones that need the patient to get into a backwards bending position called extension exercises or press-ups which cause the pain to ease by moving the muscles in the lower extremities upwards and into the lower back.

Spinal Stenosis Sciatica
This is caused by nerve root irritation or impinging which results in the constriction of the nerve’s passageway. This pain shots down the leg while walking or muscle flexing. All exercises that require the patient to bend forward and flex the lower spine help to clear and expand these passages by stabilizing the lower spine thus allowing for the condition heal.

Degenerative disc disease Sciatica
When a degenerative disc intrudes on a sciatic nerve in the lower back it is the cause of sciatica. Exercises for lumbar stabilization are prescribed for this kind of sciatica and includes the McKenzie Method. The lumbar spine and pelvic regions are trained using these exercise movements.

Isthmic spondylolisthesis Sciatica
When the N5 nerve root is impinged upon it is the cause of this kind of sciatica. There are two kinds of exercises that help in this condition; flexing and stabilizing that help the lumbar spine to remain stable in a flexed position.

Piriformis syndrome
Experiencing pain along the sciatic nerve is a common symptom of piriformis syndrome. But this syndrome is not really sciatica but a muscle called the piriformis muscle which lies in close proximity to the sciatic nerve itself is irritates it to cause pain. These cause excruciating pain, tingling and numbness running from the lower back, to the rear and sometimes down the leg and into the foot. Stretching exercises for the piriformis muscle, hamstring muscles and hip extensor muscles helps decrease the painful symptoms.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
The inflammation of the SI joint or sacroiliac joint causes this. Therefore this is not true sciatica but the similar symptoms occur and exercise like stretching and movement exercises should be performed to help alleviate the pain.

Long term Sciatica Relief
These exercises must be performed as a part of daily living and not just treated as a means to get rid of back pain. They ensure good spinal health and help to ease the pressures that stress has on us. It is also a must to maintain good posture while performing daily activities and use ergonomically correct furniture to make sure the lower back is well supported and avoid standing or being cramped in the same position for long periods of time.

Sciatica Treatment. Home Remedies for Sciatica Relief.

Treatments for Sciatica, an aching condition that is characterized by lower back pain are numerous. Let us discover some effective Home Remedies for Sciatica Relief…

Sciatica Causes
It is essential to understand that sciatica itself is not the name of a disease but rather it is condition caused by a set of other conditions. Sciatica is generally caused by these primary conditions:

 sciatic nerve damage treatment

Firstly we have Herniated Discs which is sciatica caused by the pressure from a herniated or protruding disc on the sciatic nerve. A herniated disc is simply a disc that has been displaced due to external pressure from an accident or by constant pressure due to muscle imbalance. This can be the cause for sciatic pain but it is equally important to note that many people with herniated discs may not experience any pain at all.

Then sciatica can be caused by Piriformis Syndrome. The piriformis muscle exerts pressure on the sciatic nerve when muscle imbalances cause the joints in the pelvic areas to be pulled out of place and thus changing the seat of the piriformis muscle, which in turn puts pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Spinal Stenosis is the narrowing or constriction of the space in the spinal canal causing muscle imbalances that tug at your hip and spine and cause them to become positioned awkwardly causing an irritation due to constant contact and pressuring the sciatic nerve.

Isthmic Spondylolisthesis
This is when a vertebra is dislocated from its normal position and can start to pinch the sciatic nerve.

If you have noticed all these conditions have a common denominator: muscle strain or muscle imbalance. A muscle injury can occur anywhere and it means that your muscle flexibility is reduced and there is pain in most cases followed by various other sciatica symptoms like numbness, muscular irritation, tingling sensation etc.

These may be a result of a more serious internal condition and it is imperative to consult a doctor immediately to be able to diagnose the correct reason for this condition. In rare cases, a surgery might be necessary too but in most cases the diagnosis consists of pain alleviating medication, analgesics and specially designed exercises that must be practiced with regularity in order to obtain sciatica relief.

Sciatica Treatment
Though exercises and medication is a must but they must only be taken after advice from a doctor. But there have been some time tested natural cures for healing sciatica.

Sciatica cures assume various forms and these home remedies have been found to be very helpful if incorporated into daily life along with the proper exercise routines.

Home remedies for sciatica relief
Juices like the juice of potatoes and celery leaves. These juices in combination are said to provide sciatica relief when drunk in a minimum quantity of 10 ounces daily. The addition of carrots and beetroots to this mixture is said to fortify the strength and taste. If you can’t drink the juice drinking celery tea throughout the day is also beneficial.

Elderberry juice and/or elderberry tea is a known muscle relaxant and stimulant and is said to treat sciatica symptoms.

Consuming raw garlic or taking garlic supplements with along with additional supplements of vitamin B1 and B-complex gives relief from aches and pains, aids circulation, is an anti-oxidant and also provides the body with warmth and energy.

The common natural sources of B1 or Thiamine are Green peas, Spinach, Liver, Beef, and Pork, Navy beans, Nuts, Pinto beans, Bananas, Soybeans, Whole-grain Cereals, Breads, unpolished rice and Legumes. Thus maintaining a healthy balanced diet containing these and salads containing watercress and parsley apart from green leafy vegetables and fresh red vegetables is very important for good health.

Some claim that garlic milk also can be an excellent sciatica home treatment. Just mince two cloves of garlic in about a cup of milk and drink this concoction twice daily and the results can be seen in just a week’s time.

Germans have been eating raw sauerkraut since ages to relieve muscular pain.

However, care must be taken to avoid garlic if you are taking any other medication like anticoagulants, if you have any bleeding disorders or ulcers and take the advice of your doctor before taking garlic supplements.

Another magical home remedy to treat sciatica is fresh minced horseradish poultice, which when applied to the painful areas and kept for at least an hour at a time stimulates the sciatica nerve and give tremendous relief from sciatica pain.

Water is one of the best natural treatment options for sciatica pain relief. Water can help to bring down pain by improving circulation. Taking long hot bath or a shower and following it up with a short cold shower is said to boost the body’s circulation and reduce pain. Taking hot and cold compresses too is equally beneficial.

Treatments for sciatica must include a good diet, exercise and the patient must aim at improving overall health. Also to avoid such problems in the long run, sleeping on a firm mattress, sitting and standing in a good posture, avoiding lifting heavy loads should be a part of everyday care that must be taken. It is these small things that cause sciatica over a period of time.

Sciatica Cured!

Sciatica is the Latin word for "Pain down the back of the leg" Sciatica is referred pain usually caused by trapping the sciatic nerve in the lower back.

Finding a cure for Sciatica is a challenge, have you searched without finding anything? Maybe you have and have decided to give up, but are still hoping to find some relief for the pain.

I am not going to lay claim to any cures for sciatica, but I will give you some guidelines to follow in helping to relieve your pain and hopefully stop it from returning. So for now let’s call them cures for sciatica, for if they can give you some relief from pain and minimise the episodes, then it is in its own way, a cure.

sciatica nerve treatmentRelease muscle Tension - There is a muscle called the Piriformis muscle. This muscle is usually the culprit when it comes to your pain. The sciatic nerve runs through this muscle and if it is tight, it will irritate the nerve and therefore, pain.

Strengthen Muscles - If one muscle is tight and the others are weak, there is going to be an imbalance. You can do some exercises at home that will help to strengthen and improve their strength, and this in turn will increase the blood supply, which is why they are weak to begin with.

Align the Pelvis - Your pelvis is the foundation, the stabiliser and when this is distorted, there can be a lot of lower back pain.

Lower Back Strength - It is not going to help to work on the nerve if you have a weak back. Strengthen your back and you will help the pelvis get back into alignment and release the tension.

Assess Your Spine - You need to know the problem is coming from to be able to get rid of it permanently. To use these techniques properly, you need to know where to place your focus.

*So here you have it, your cures for sciatica, but it does not come from a bottle, but you! In your own home exercising on your living room floor.

Treatment for Sciatica:Tip A.
A. Ice - In the first 48 hours, you need to use ice to help reduce the inflammation which is around the nerve. This can help to stop it from getting worse. Use the ice for 10 minutes, then off for 10 and on again for 10 minutes. Keep doing this 2 or 3 times.

Treatment for Sciatica:Tip B.
B. Stretching - You have a muscle called the Piriformis muscle. This muscle has the sciatic nerve running through it or along side it. By stretching this muscle you are able to ease the pain quickly.

Treatment for Sciatica:Tip C.
C. Pelvic Balance - This is a great treatment for sciatica because the pelvis is what keeps everything in balance. If your pelvis is balanced, then the tension will ease off all the other areas. You can do this by lying down on the floor. Place your hand under each side of your pelvis where you would wear your belt. As you are doing this, notice if there is more pressure on one side or the other. If here is more pressure on one side compared to the other, then your pelvis is not balanced.

Treatment for Sciatica:Tip D.
D. Move - You need to keep moving, not too fast, but move. If you sit for to long at a time, your muscles will tighten much quicker. Have you ever noticed that your pain is worse in the morning after sleeping all night? When you are able to move, this helps your pain ease a little. This is why moving is an important treatment for sciatica.

*Let pain be your guide.

If you are in pain, you listen to your body and stop. Do not ever let anyone tell you to push through the pain. You are the only one who knows your pain threshold.

Do seek professional help if you are in anyway concerned about your back pain.

Sciatic Nerve Pain - What are The Symptoms and Causes?

Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain is a term often used to describe all sorts of back pain. In fact, less than 5% of people who suffer from lower back pain will have sciatica.

Sciatica is caused by a sciatic nerve irritation. This is most commonly caused by a disc bulge in the lower back.

sciatica pain treatment symptoms
What is the sciatic nerve?

To understand this you need to have a bit of an idea about human spine anatomy.
The spine is made up of large bones called vertebra. These bones are separated from one another by spinal discs. Each vertebra overlaps the next at the back to form a joint called a facet joint.

Running down through the middle of the spine is a channel called the spinal canal, its here that the spinal cord sits. The spinal cord is the main structure that passes messages from our brains to our bodies.

At each vertebra the spinal cord braches out to form a nerve root, these nerve roots leave the spine via a gap between each vertebra and then bundle together to form much larger nerves.

In the legs there are two main, large nerves, the femoral nerve at the front and the sciatic nerve at the back. The sciatic nerve passes down through the buttock area into the back of the thigh and leg.

What causes sciatic nerve pain?

The most common cause of sciatica is a disc bulge. The disc is a very misunderstood structure; it has been blamed for back pain ever since it was discovered. Over the years we have started to believe that the disc is a really weak and vulnerable structure.

The term slipped disc makes it sound as if it can slip about inside. In truth the disc cant slip anywhere, it is firmly fixed at the top and at the bottom to the vertebrae above and below.

The disc can and does cause problems however. Sometimes the central area of the disc bulges, usually backwards and sideways. This can cause an irritation of the nerve root as it leaves the spine. Occasionally the bulge is severe enough to actually squash or trap the nerve but this is fairly rare.

When the nerve is irritated by the disc bulge it can become inflamed. Remember what it feels like to hit your finger with a hammer or catch it in a door for a moment. Following the nasty sharp pain you are left with a dull ache. The finger may become red and swollen; there may be some heat or warmth there. After a while, those symptoms settle and everything gets back to normal. Its very similar with the sciatic nerve. It becomes very sore and can give you a lot of pain, even though it is not actually trapped or squashed.

An important thing to know is that many people have disc bulges and have no symptoms at all.

There are some other conditions that can cause sciatic nerve pain but they are much less common. These include degenerative disc disease, severe osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis. Fractures, tumours and infection can also cause sciatica.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

If someone has true sciatica then they often have pain in the legs, usually in the buttock, back of the thigh or calf. There may also be pins and needles and numbness in parts of the leg.

In severe cases the leg may feel weak and the strength may be reduced. Often, disc bulges cause no back pain at all; the symptoms are felt only in the legs.

Why are so many people given the diagnosis of sciatica?

Very often, as soon as anyone has any lower back or leg symptoms they are told that have sciatica. However, there are other things that can cause leg pain; a strained facet joint for example can cause pain in the buttock and thigh. But if the sciatic nerve is not irritated then it is not sciatica.

The best way to tell if it is sciatica is to undergo a series of test that your physiotherapist or doctor can perform. These simple clinical tests will be enough to identify if the problem is an irritated sciatic nerve.

Sciatica Pain Relief Tips

Sciatica is a condition in which pain shoots down an leg or arm as a result of a pinched nerve. Pain that runs along the course of the sciatic nerve is referred to by laypersons as sciatica.

It especially appears in the back of the thigh also causing pain in the lower back, buttocks, hips, and/or adjacent parts. Sciatica is pain caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that are branches of the sciatic nerve. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot.

  sciatica nerve pain and meds

Generally, sciatica is something older people have to endure. Perhaps it’s a simple matter of a hip or pelvic bone out of place. Sciatic pain is more commonly due to a back problem not a leg or knee problem. Have you had an MRI of your lower back, I would ask your Dr. about that, especially at your young age.

Going to see a Massage Therapist will help alot. They can show you some stretches you can do at home to loosen up your muscles in your low back ,legs and butt, that will help out alot.

Surgery for sciatica might be warranted if the sciatic nerve pain is severe and has not been relieved with appropriate manual or medical treatments. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they have any symptoms of progressive lower extremity weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control.

The single most useful thing is a back rehabilitation course. It consisted of exercises which strengthen the spinal muscles and surrounding muscles. Also try and find a pain support group which you can attend. Others in the same situation can be a great support. Some groups also have relaxation sessions, hypnotism and other alternative remedy sessions to help their members.

Try ibuprofen,( if you are not pregnant) it helps a bit sometimes, and a hot water bottle, and lay down for a while. Also hot bath sometimes helps.

Unfortunately, if you don’t get professional help, it is a condition that can worsen over time and will certainly not heal itself. You can find chiropractors in your area that are willing to adjust their pricing according to your needs and income.

Stay active and go outside. As annoying as it is sometimes to not relax on the sofa, it is really good for you to stay active. If that means walking then fine. Well, there is a fairly new one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. This treatment really seems to stop a main cause of sciatica, and I know of some persons who got rid of all symptoms within a short period of time.

Never put ice directly on your skin, but try putting it into a ziptop bag, put that into a damp clothe, and put that onto you effected side buttock for about 20 minutes. This should help relax the piriformis, which could be in spasm, causing sciatic nerve pain.

Oil of wintergreen, which contains methyl salicylate, is widely used externally for its anti-inflammatory activity for arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, and sore muscles.

Techniques to Release muscle tension - the Piriformis muscle is the most common cause of sciatica pain. The sciatic nerve runs through the muscle and if tight it will irritate the sciatic nerve causing your sciatica. So the first essential ingredient is a technique or two to release muscle tension.

Techniques to Strengthen Muscles - just like a see-saw, if one muscle is too tight there will be others that are too weak. You need exercises (not necessarily gym exercises or lifting weights) to improve the strength of muscles. Ideally ways to improve the nerve and blood supply as this is the prime reason they weaken in the first place.

Methods to Re-Align the Pelvis - the pelvic bones can distort. When they do this the muscles in the buttock (the Piriformis) will tighten, leading to sciatica. Pelvic distortion is also the biggest cause of lower back pain. If you fail to re-align the pelvis, long term sciatic relief will not happen.

Ways to Improve Lower Back Strength - there is no point just targeting the sciatic nerve unless you remove all lower back pain and the distortions there. Sciatica is caused by many factors. The lower spine and spine in general can help to cause sciatica. So you need ways to assess your spine for distortion patterns, to see if there are other factors causing your sciatica.

Techniques to Assess your Spine - if you can’t see where the problem is coming from, you will not know how to eliminate it permanently. All so called sciatica cures need to teach you ways to assess your spine and see where problems occur.

And that is it in a nut shell. If you can find a product that covers all these areas, then you have found a product that will not only eliminate your sciatica, it will also stop it returning.

Sciatica pain is dreadful, it drags you down, you feel frustrated from all the things you can’t do. You want relief; you want to be able to move around without the fear of pain suddenly running down your leg. Sciatica is common and debilitating and it can be easily removed if the product you seek has all the right ingredients - assess, stretch, strengthen, re-align and re-balance.
